This page is for anyone who runs into an unfamiliar term in another article on this site — 'what is a shadowban,' 'what is watch time,' 'what's the difference between reach and engagement.' Instead of re-explaining every term in every article, we've consolidated them here.
Algorithm
Reach
The number of unique accounts that saw a given piece of content. Usually split into 'reach from followers' and 'reach from non-followers' — the latter is the central growth metric, since it represents a new audience that didn't know you before.
Explore / FYP (For You Page)
The areas where users discover content from creators they don't follow. Instagram's Explore and TikTok's FYP work on different principles: Explore leans more on prior interests, while the FYP is less dependent on follower base and leans more on the video's own performance in its first minutes.
Watch Time
How long viewers stay on video content before scrolling away. One of the strongest ranking signals for video content, especially on Reels and TikTok — stronger than likes and the raw view count itself.
Engagement
Any active action a user takes on content — like, comment, save, share. Not all actions are equal: saves and shares are generally considered stronger signals than likes.
Measurement
Save Rate
The percentage of viewers who saved content, relative to total views. A high ratio signals the content is seen as having future value — not just interesting in the moment. Especially relevant for carousels and information-based content.
Profile Visits
How many viewers visited the profile after watching specific content. An important intermediate metric: it signals the content created interest in the brand itself, not just in the single post.
Reply Rate
The percentage of viewers who replied or sent a message, mostly relevant for Stories. The central retention metric — not how many people saw it, but how many bothered to respond.
KPI (Key Performance Indicator)
A metric chosen in advance to track success against a specific business goal. The common mistake: tracking likes because they're the most visible, instead of the metric actually tied to the goal (like inquiries, not views).
Account Safety
Shadowban
A state where an account keeps functioning normally but its reach to non-followers drops significantly, usually as a result of activity flagged as unnatural or a policy violation. Platforms don't always disclose this explicitly.
Rate Limit
A technical cap on the number of actions (likes, follows, comments) an account can perform in a given time window. Exceeding it can trigger a temporary block on the action or slow down reach.
Unauthorized automation
Using tools or bots that perform actions (likes, follows, comments) automatically and outside the platform's official tools. This violates the terms of service and is the main risk factor for a business account.
Formats
Reels
Instagram's short-video format, the primary engine for reaching a new audience. Works best with a strong hook in the first seconds and a 7–15 second length for growth-focused content.
Carousel
A multi-slide post the viewer swipes through. Generates higher save ratios than Reels but is consumed mostly by an existing audience.
Stories
Temporary (24-hour) content shown mostly to existing followers. Used for retention, engagement, and direct inquiries — not for growing new followers.
Pinned Video
On TikTok: up to 3 videos that can be pinned to the top of a profile, so they're the first thing a new visitor sees.
Highlights
On Instagram: permanent collections of Stories displayed at the top of a profile. They function as a kind of miniature landing page for a new visitor.
